SAN FRANCISCO – After Saturday's second contest was halted due to darkness at the start of the ninth inning, the game was scheduled to resume on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos led the matchup 6-3 against the San Francisco State Gators.
CPP finished the game after adding another run in the top of the ninth as
Jared James reached on a fielding error, then
Caleb Romo doubled to bring him home and give the Broncos their final score of seven runs.
In the bottom half of what would be the ninth and final inning, the Gators posted another run after a pair of singles separated by an advancing wild pitch allowed for their fourth run to score. The final score in the contest was 7-4.
Earning the win for the Broncos was
Tyler Rowe. It was his second of the season and in the game he threw 4.1 innings of relief, holding the Gators hitless and scoreless.
Game Three: CPP 9 – SFSU 4 Having a day to call theirs, the Broncos had a few star offensive players in the series finale. Romo posted two hits in four at bats while securing three runs batted in and a run scored.
Joining Romo on the multi-hit list were
Jason Padlo and
Chris Stratton. Padlo recorded three hits and two runs scored while reaching base safely four times. Stratton reached safely three times as he added a pair of knocks and a walk to score and tally an RBI.
As a team, the Green and Gold tallied 12 hits in the game and recorded a final score of 9-4 to improve the squad to a season tally of 10-4, complete with a 2-1 showing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The loss for the Gators drops them to a record of 1-2 in conference play en route to a 7-6 showing on the season.
In the game, both Romo and
Ryan Webberley added a homerun, tallying both of their second four-baggers of the season.
Starting on the mound for the Broncos and earning the win was
Peter Bayer. He dealt for a total of 6.2 innings, racking up 10 strikeouts with only allowing two runs and two walks on four hits.
Closing out the game for the Green and Gold was
Ryan Alsworth whose 2.1 innings of relief allowed two runs to score on three hits, but the Broncos to earn the win. The sophomore earned the save with his performance.
In the first inning, CPP struck quickly. After Stratton reached safely via a fielding error by the first baseman, he advanced on a James groundout and a stolen base and Romo posted his first hit of the day to bring him home.
The next couple runs for the Broncos would again be credited to Romo as he cranked his homer to left field after James walked to tally runs two and three. That fourth inning would be a busy one as
Cody Martin reached first on a fielder's choice with a sacrifice bunt that brought home
Nic Hernandez.
To tack on another run in the inning, Stratton would then single to right to advance both Webberley and Martin and send Padlo across the plate.
With the game score at 5-0, the Gators would remove their zero from the board in the seventh inning after a single to left center scored two base runners.
As the eighth inning rolled around, the Broncos leadoff batter, Padlo, reached safely with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and third on another wild pitch. Then a single from Martin brought Padlo home. After that after, the next batter, Webberley homered to left to score himself and Martin. The Broncos final run of the game came as
Jacob Bernardy doubled to bring
Nicholas Bruno home.
In the bottom half of the eighth, the home team would attempt to pull back as they added a couple runs, but to no avail as at the game's conclusion the final score stood 9-4 CPP.
Looking Ahead The Broncos will return home next weekend as they host the Sonoma State Seawolves. The two squads will have a double header on Saturday and then play the final game of the series on Sunday.
