Broncos Split Series Opener with Seawolves

POMONA, Calif. – On the series-opening day between the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and the Sonoma State Seawolves, the two squads split the doubleheader at Scolinos Field. A murky weather forecast for the weekend forced the series to be moved up sooner than originally planned.

The series finale is set for Saturday with a 1 p.m. start at Scolinos Field.

CPP now holds a season record of 11-5, complete with a 3-2 mark in conference play. The Seawolves have amassed a 5-3 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) en route to their season tally of 7-10.

GAME ONE: CPP 10- SSU 2

The Broncos had a stellar day at the plate in both games, securing 14 hits in the first game and 11 in the second. Game one saw Broncos' ace Ryan Olson start on the bump and ultimately earn the win. The junior dealt for five innings of three hits baseball and allowed just a single earned run. He also added a pair of strikeouts to his game resume.

In the game, the Broncos scored early and often, tallying three three-run innings. In the first inning, a single from Nic Hernandez through the right side scored both Jared James and Nicholas Bruno. The next play, a single to left for Michael Zidek scored Caleb Romo who was waiting on third.

The next run in the contest would be the only run allowed by Olson as the Seawolves scored in the fifth on a double. In the bottom half of the inning, CPP answered back as a failed pickoff attempt by the visiting pitcher on Romo at second scored James from third to post the Broncos' fourth run.

After the CPP half of the fifth, Tyler Rowe took the mound for the Broncos and closed out the game. The newcomer to the Green and Gold pitching staff dealt for four innings of his own while allowing just a single hit and a single run to score. He tallied three strikeouts and earned the save for his performance.

In the sixth inning the Green and Gold would post another three spot as a Bruno double scored Jacob Bernardy, and James would crank his fourth homer of the season to score himself and Bruno, bringing the game score to 7-0.

With a fielder's choice by the CPP infield, another member of the opposition would head home for their second and final run of the contest.

The final runs scored in the game came as the home team's final three-run inning in the eighth. Bruno sent a long sacrifice fly to right field that brought Bernardy home from third. A wild pitch came at the hands of the Seawolves' closer and allowed James to advance and Stratton to score, and the final run came with a Zidek double down the left field line to score James.

GAME TWO: CPP 3 – SSU 6

Despite the hometown Broncos outhitting the visiting Seawolves 11-6 in the second game of the doubleheader, a bevy of errors from both sides gave the game its final score of 6-3 in favor of Sonoma State.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos was Michael Koval who allowed just one earned run on three hits in 4.1 innings on the bump. Koval, through 14 at-bats, struck out three, and lowered his Earned Run Average (ERA) to 3.38.

In the third inning, the first run in the game was for the visitors to Scolinos Field. A single to second base and a subsequent error by the Broncos' second baseman allowed an unearned run to score and post the Seawolves' first run.

Looking ahead to the home half of the same inning and Romo launched a long double off the left centerfield fence to score Bruno and tie the game up at one apiece.

In the fourth inning, the SSU squad would score their second run on a sacrifice fly to right and then close out the Green and Gold in their half of the inning.

The Broncos sent Max Bethell to the mound to close out the fifth inning for Koval. Just one earned run would score on the Broncos' captain, but with a few errors in the field, four total would cross in the game, three of them unearned. The loss for the game is credited to Bethell as he was the pitcher of note when the lead was forfeit.

In the home half of the fifth, the Broncos would post their final two runs of the game, and secure the lead until the following inning. A stolen base from both Hernandez and Romo forced a SSU throwing error that allowed for Romo to score. A single through the left side for Ryan Webberley then brought home Hernandez and the score stood in CPP's favor at 3-2.

The sixth inning came with the Seawolves regaining the lead and eventually securing the win on the same score. A double to left scored a pair of runs to put the SSU squad up 4-3. Then a fielding error by the CPP shortstop brought another runner home. The final run of the game was a sacrifice fly to center that score run No. 6.

Closing out the game for the Broncos on the mound were both Matthew Grier and Erik Trask. Grier faced just one batted in the top of the ninth and struck him out, then Trask finished the final two.
