SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured a 17-11 win over the Cal State San Marcos Cougars on Friday. The game was moved up and rightly so as the final outs were reached with the beginning of a downpour.
Earning the win in the game for the Bronco squad was
Tyler Rowe, as the newcomer to CPP secured his third of the season with a two-inning relief performance. Starting on the mound for the Broncos was senior newcomer
Peter Bayer, a native to Colorado. The righty dealt for 3.1 innings and allowed four runs to cross, three of which were earned. His showing included just two hits added to eight strikeouts and five walks.
Drawing the loss in the contest was the Cougars' starting pitcher
Cameron Mackenzie, the loss drops the senior to a 3-1 record thus far on the season.
In the top of the second, the Green and Gold struck first, as
Jacob Bernardy reached first safely on a fielder's choice and scored
Nic Hernandez from third. The next batter for CPP was
Ryan Webberley, who singled to center to score
Frankie Nogales and give the visitors the 2-0 lead.
At the conclusion of the third inning, the Broncos held a seven-run lead. CPP's third run came as Nogales singled through the right side with the bases loaded and scored
Jason Padlo.
Bernardy then would bring home the Green and Gold's fourth run as his single scored Hernandez and advanced Nogales and
Michael Zidek. Webberley then sent a double down the left field line to score two and bring up
Chris Stratton. The Broncos' second baseman then added a sacrifice fly to score Bernardy and bring home run No. 7.
Continuing to add to the lead, the Green and Gold scored in the fourth as well with a single up the middle from Zidek to score Hernandez.
In the following inning, the home team would post a five-spot that started with an error for the CPP pitcher. After that, a single, balk, single, and flyout to center showed the scoreboard with an 8-5 visitor advantage.
To gain a couple back, the Broncos scored again in the fifth to make the game 10-5. Stratton added his second sacrifice fly of the game and scored
Cody Martin. Bernardy then scored on passed ball.
In the top of the sixth, CPP added three more runs to increase their lead to eight. Padlo scored and Hernandez advanced on a balk by the CSUSM pitcher. Martin then singled to right to score Hernandez, then proceeded to steal second and score with a Bernardy single.
With the score at 13-5 in CPP's favor, the home team fought back and added five more in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of singles, a hit-by-pitch, walk, and a fielder's choice gave the Cougars their sixth through tenth runs. One of the singles was
Brandon Bentson, and with his hit, the Cougars' first baseman moved into first-place on CSUSM's career hit list with 227. Bentson added another hit later to reach 228.
The Broncos added another run in the top of the ninth as Stratton singles through the right side to score
Ryan Webberley.
Jared James then doubled to score Stratton and extend his reached safely tally to 18-consecutive games.
Nogales then added a pair of RBIs as he singled to score both Padlo and James and make the game reach its final score of 17-11.
The Broncos and Cougars will return to action Saturday for the first game of a doubleheader at Scolinos Field. Game one is set for 2 p.m. with the second start tentatively placed at 5 p.m.
