Broncos Win Both Games of Twinbill Saturday!

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team emerged victorious in Saturday's doubleheader against the Cal State San Marcos Cougars, winning game one 6-2, then following up with an extra-innings 6-5 victory in game two.

Earning wins for the Broncos in the two games were Max Bethell and Ryan Alsworth.

GAME ONE: CPP 6 – CSUSM 2

Bethell, the Broncos senior southpaw and team captain secured his second win of the season with a stellar 8.1 innings pitched while allowing just six hits and two runs to score. Through the performance, the Garden Grove native through just 110 pitches for CPP.

Drawing the loss in the contest was Cougars' starting pitcher, Emilio Esquibel.

The Broncos kept their momentum from Friday's 17-11 win with two runs in the bottom half the first inning. Scoring first was Chris Stratton with a single to right field for Nic Hernandez. After the first run was scored, Frankie Nogales added a run to the board as a single through the left side scored Hernandez.

In the third inning, the Broncos added a security run as Nogales came through once again with a single up the middle that, once again, scored Hernandez.

Looking at the top half of the next inning, CSUSM scored its first run as designated hitter Jon Putnam doubled to score Tyler Place. But not to be outdone, the Broncos answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Jared James extended his on-base-safely streak to 19 with a double down the left field line that scored Jacob Bernardy and advanced Ryan Webberley. Jason Padlo then singled through the right side to score Webberley for CPP's final run.

In the ninth, the visitors to Scolinos Field scored again as a single up the middle advanced one runner and scored another, giving the game its final 6-2 score.

GAME TWO: CPP 6 – CSUSM 5 (8 INNINGS)

In the Broncos' second game, extra inning ensued as a CPP comeback was fueled with a two-run seventh to give the home team a chance to clinch it. Starting on the mound for CPP was Ryan Olson. An All-American last season, Olson remained true to his well-deserved fame with a 6.2 inning showing coupled with six strikeouts and just one walk.

The loss for the Cougars was given to Jordan Kunz, the visitor's fifth pitcher to take the mound in the second game of the day.

After Olson, Matthew Grier and Peter Beattie both took the mound, but closing it out and earning the win was Ryan Alsworth. The sophomore pitched the top half of the eighth and struck out one batter while allowing just two to reach.

For his sixth of the season, Jared James launched another homerun over the right field fence with a solo shot to open up scoring in the third inning. The fourth and fifth both found Cougars crossing the plate as a single, sacrifice bunt, single, and sacrifice fly scored four of the visitors' runners.

Putting CPP back in contention in the game, Webberley doubled to center field to score Bernardy and post the Green and Gold's second run. James the singled to center to score Webberley to put CPP just one back.

In the seventh Putnam of the Cougars scored singled again to scored Brandon Bentson for CSUSM's final run of the game.

The bottom half of the seventh was where the Broncos earned their stay. Despite trailing by two, CPP fought hard. Padlo reached on an error by the third baseman, the error allowed for Stratton to score and put CPP just one back. Hernandez then beat out a throw as a fielder's choice enabled him to score James from third.

In the eighth inning, with the bases loaded, Michael Erb came in clutch for the Broncos as a grounder to the short stop forced the Cougar to attempt a play at second, second-guess his decision, and then rush a throw to first. With his rushed throw, Erb was able to reach safely and score Webberley.
