SAN MARCOS, Calif. – With a gem of a pitching performance from
Michael Koval, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team secured a 4-0 win on Sunday and with it, a four-game sweep of the Cal State San Marcos Cougars.
The final game of the series was held at the Cougars' ballpark and was over in just under two and a half hours as CPP's starter pitched 93 pitches through his career-best nine innings pitched. The junior pitcher threw his first-ever complete game, allowing just five hits while striking out six and walking none.
CPP's offense stayed hot as it did through the entire series and posted 10 hits while scoring four runs. In the first inning,
Jared James doubled to reach base safely in his 21st-consecutive game. After his double
Jason Padlo singled up the middle to score him and earn an RBI.
With that run, the loss would eventually go the Cougars' starting pitcher Manny Barragan. Koval's win in the game was his third of the season.
The game would then remain scoreless until the final couple innings. In the eighth,
Cody Martin laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Padlo and advance
Nic Hernandez to second.
Michael Erb then came up and singled through the right side to score Hernandez. After advancing to second on the throw, Erb would score with a single through the left side from
Jacob Bernardy.
Bernardy's RBI gave the Broncos their fourth and final run of the contest. Padlo was the Green and Gold's top hitter in the contest as he went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored himself. Five batters with solo hits of their own made up the home team's five knocks.
CPP will return to action on Saturday as they host the UC San Diego Tritons in a Saturday through Monday series next weekend. The first game of the series will be March 19 and will feature a 6 p.m. start time against the Tritons.
After the series-opener, the Broncos will head down to UCSD for a doubleheader hosted by the Tritons with game times set for 2 and 5 p.m.
