POMONA, Calif. – If not for the second inning, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball would have handily won the series finale against the Sonoma State Seawolves. An 8-7 loss was in store for CPP as the Broncos fell to the visitors to Scolinos Field.
Overall on the season, the Green and Gold now carry an 11-6 record complete with a 3-3 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The win in the contest boosted the SSU squad to a conference tally of 6-3 en route to their 8-10 showing on the season.
Starting on the mound for the Broncos was
Peter Bayer, the newcomer to the Broncos unfortunately wasn't able to find his groove in the game and lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on three hits. The loss was his first of the season.
The second inning saw the visitors to Pomona take a seven-run lead on the hometown CPP team. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded scored the first two, then a single through the left side added two more. Add a double to right to post No. 5, and a single up the middle to tally six and seven.
In the third inning,
Jared James got things started for his team as he launched his second homerun in as many days. His run came with two outs in the bottom half of the inning. The long ball was his fifth of the season.
In the next half inning, the visitors scored their eighth and final run with a single up the middle, this time however, the run was unearned.
In the home half of the same inning, CPP posted another couple of runs as
Jacob Bernardy sent a sacrifice fly out to left field and scored
Nic Hernandez from third. The following run was scored with a walk to
Jason Padlo, scoring
Michael Erb.
The sixth inning came, and with it Padlo would come through again, smacking a double down the right field line to bring Bernardy home, making the game score 8-4. After his double,
Caleb Romo earned a sacrifice fly of his own that scored
Chris Stratton from third.
In the ninth inning, the Green and Gold would get the hearts of the Seawolves racing as
Ryan Webberley hit his third homerun of the season with a long shot over the left field fence. Scoring with himself was Hernandez. Webberley's run gave the CPP team its seventh and final run of the contest.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday March 11, against the newest team in the CCAA, the Cal State San Marcos Cougars. Friday and Sunday will take place at the CSUSM Baseball Field in San Marcos and the Saturday doubleheader will be held at Scolinos Field.
Thus far this season, the Cougars have secured an even 10-10 record on the season while tallying a 1-6 showing amongst conference opponents.
