CPP to Play Cal Baptist in NCAA 1st Round

INDIANAPOLIS – As announced in the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday evening, the No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team has been placed as the No. 6 seed in the NCAA West Region heading into the tournament.

With a 12 p.m. tipoff Friday at Western Oregon University, the Broncos will challenge the Cal Baptist Lancers, who have secured the No. 3 seed for the second-consecutive season.

The Broncos' selection into the NCAA West Region tournament marks the fourth-consecutive season that CPP has advanced to the tournament, a program first. All three seniors on the Broncos' team, Barry Bell, Francois Tchoyi, and Jordan Faison, have been with the program for each of those appearances.

On the season, the Cal Poly Pomona squad recorded a 22-7 overall mark, complete with a 14-6 third-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Thus far in postseason play, the Green and Gold have tallied a 1-1 record, topping the San Francisco State Gators in the first round of the CCAA tourney before falling to the UC San Diego Tritons in the semifinals.

The all-time record between the Broncos and the Lancers stands at 4-1 in CPP's favor, however one will have to look back to the 1983-84 season to find the last meeting between the two. In that matchup, the Green and Gold topped the CBU squad 72-68. Friday's contest will be the first postseason matchup between the two.

This appearance will be the 12th trip to the NCAA postseason in program history and the 10th in head coach Greg Kamansky's tenure.  In the 11 prior trips for men's basketball, the team has tallied a 23-10 record. In Kamansky's time at the helm, the Broncos have earned a 20-8 showing, including the national title in 2010.

The winner of the Friday matchup between CPP and CBU will advance to play the winner of the Chico State, UC San Diego game on Saturday at 5 p.m.
