POMONA, Calif. – As they lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos will turn its sights on the final four weeks of conference play. First up for CPP will be the Wildcats of Chico State.
The Green and Gold currently hold an overall mark of 22-12 on the season, complete with a 14-8 mark in conference play. As they once again assume the mantle of series host, the Broncos hope to excel against the Wildcats in the Saturday-Sunday matchup.
First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 p.m. with the second game starting shortly after the conclusion of game one. The Sunday contest and series finale is set to being at 12 p.m.
Chico currently holds second place in the conference's North Division with a record of 14-9 en route to their season tally of 24-11. In last season's showdown, the Broncos grabbed wins in 3-of-4 games from the Wildcats. In the all-time series, the Chico squad holds a pretty decisive advantage having won 56 contests to CPP's 32.
The Broncos return home after a series split with the Stanislaus State Warriors. Due to rain, the series was cut to just a Sunday doubleheader, down from the initially-planned three-game series. Chico will take to the road following a 2-1 series loss against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at Nettleton Stadium, the Wildcats' home field.
As a squad, the CPP team has locked down a .297 batting average thus far this season, while the Broncos' pitching staff has limited opposing hitters to a .232 average at the plate.
With 23 hits in 56 at bats,
Daniel Pitts is leading the Broncos' batters with a .411 average. He has had hits in 12 of the last 13 games, and seven multi-hit games. In the CPP win over Stanislaus on Sunday, the senior cranked his second homerun of the season to help the Green and Gold secure a 6-3 victory.
Second to Pitts in average, but leading the team in hits, runs scored, on base percentage, and steals is
Chris Stratton. A force to be reckoned with on the bases, Stratton has swiped 19 bags, helping the Broncos to a conference-leading 56 stolen bases.
The weekend series has a high probability of being a pitchers' battle. The Broncos lead the CCAA with a 3.46 Earned Run Average (ERA), but right on their tails are the Wildcats' with a 3.47 ERA of their own.
In the strikeout category, the Broncos lead the conference as well, tallying 280 strikeouts thus far in 34 games. CPP's pitchers also have allowed just five homeruns, also a conference low.
