Broncos Defeat Golden Eagles 13-7 in Game 1

LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos secured the victory on Thursday night in the Broncos' game against the Cal State LA Golden Eagles. The final score in the contest was 13-7 in CPP's favor. The Broncos improve to a 25-13 record on the season, complete with a 17-9 record against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competitors.

Earning the win for the Broncos was Peter Beattie, the Green and Gold's reliever in the contest. Beattie improves to 3-1 on the season. Starting the game, but not going enough innings to earn the win was Tyler Rowe. It was Rowe's 11th appearance of the season.

Leading off the game, the Broncos opened up with three-straight knocks. Jason Padlo tallied the third knock to score Jared James. Caleb Romo then drew a walk to load the bases. Nic Hernandez, CPP's first baseman in the contest then was hit by the pitch to score Jacob Bernardy. Daniel Pitts scored Padlo as he grounded into a double play, then the final run of the inning for the Broncos was a double to right center field for Ryan Webberley.

In the bottom of the second, the hometown Golden Eagles posted a run on a sacrifice fly to right field.

For the third time this season, and in the third inning, Daniel Pitts launched a homerun with a shot over the left center field fence that put the Broncos up 5-1. Later in the same inning James reached first on a fielder's choice that enabled Webberley enough time to score CPP's sixth run.

The CSULA squad then locked in another run in the bottom of the third with a groundout to the first baseman.

With a line drive clear over the short porch in center field, Hernandez posted his fourth homerun of the season. The long ball gave the Green and Gold run No. 7. The Golden Eagles answered back with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Staying active on the scoreboard, the Broncos locked in runs eight and nine in the fifth as Romo singled to left field and scored both Bernardy and James. In the top of six, James grabbed an infield single with Bruno and Michael Zidek on base, pinch running for Pitts. Zidek scored on the play.

CSULA scored run No. 5 in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side.

In the top of eight, the Broncos posted runs 11 and 12. Bruno recorded another double to right and scored Webberley with one out. James then singled through the right side to score Cody Martin and move over Sean Grebeck who had come in to pinch run for Bruno.

The Golden Eagles' final two runs were scored in the bottom of the eighth and ninth with a double to left center and a single to right. The Broncos answered back in the top of nine with a single to center field by Zidek that scored Romo and brought home run No. 13.

CPP will remain at Reeder Field tomorrow with the second game of the series with the Golden Eagles. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. between the two squads.
