POMONA, Calif - The 37th Annual Bronco Golf Classic was held on Monday, April 25, at the Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier with picture perfect weather and excellent course conditions.
"The Bronco Golf Classic continues to be an excellent opportunity to engage with our many friends and supporters of our university and program," Director of Athletics
Brian Swanson said. "The ability to highlight Bronco Athletics and our outstanding student-athletes in a fun and relaxed setting is truly a day that is enjoyed by everyone who attends each year."
The day began with a continental breakfast and a Putting Contest, which was won by Randy Townsend. The 104 registered golfers teed off at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start and a special Tee Off prize won by Brett Curry. Lunch, provided by the C.P.P. Foundation, included deluxe hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by the Broncos Head Athletic Trainer,
Ruem Malasarn. Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch provided on-course beverages.
The scramble-format tournament concluded with dinner, a silent and live auction, and team and individual awards. Items auctioned off included a one-week stay at the Pono Kai Resort in Kauai; golf at a number of local and private clubs; an autographed Mike Trout baseball jersey; an autographed Kole Calhoun bat; and a unique opportunity to attend an Angels game and watch batting practice from the field. Funds raised during the day all benefit the student-athletes and Bronco Athletics. Student-athletes were present and assisted at registration, on the course and at the dinner and awards' ceremony.
Special contest winners included: Men's Closest to the Pin – Mark Guenette; Men's Longest Drive – Derek Watson; and Women's Longest Drive – Trang Sanders.
Winning teams were recognized through Callaway and Low Gross scoring. Each of the winning teams received a trophy featuring authentic horseshoes from the Arabian Horse Center on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.
Recognized for their 2nd place finish in the Callaway scoring with a 53 was the team of Brian Salvage, Chris Salvage, Ryan Miller and
Greg Salvage. Taking 1st place in the Callaway scoring with a 51 was the team of David Prenovost, Randy Townsend, Steven Saunders and Randy Wallace.
Taking 2nd place in the Low Gross with a score of 58 was the team of John Forbing, George Fisher, Steve Johnson and Bernie Bernstein. First-place was awarded to the team of Nick Felter, Jasen Randell, Bill Liang and Ruben Terrazas with a low gross of 57.
"What a great day for Bronco Athletics and our golfers," concluded
Paul Bubb, Associate Athletic Director and banquet emcee. "The course was in great playing condition, the weather was fantastic with just enough wind to make it a little challenging, and the event raised both financial support and awareness for our Bronco Athletic program. Everyone won today."
