POMONA, Calif. – With an offensive clinic by the visiting Otters, the No. 28 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos fell to the No. 19 Cal State Monterey Bay squad 23-6 in the series finale at Scolinos Field.
The loss drops the Broncos, who lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South, to an overall mark of 21-10, complete with a 13-7 showing in conference play. The Otters, who were jostling their way up the ranks in the CCAA North, now hold an 11-7 mark against conference opponents and a 22-8 record on the season.
Ryan Alsworth started on the mound for the Green and Gold, and ended up with the loss in the contest. He now holds a 2-2 record on the season. Starting the game for the Otters and securing the win due in large part to his teams' offensive production was Jared Koenig, the win was his first of the year.
Five pitchers made their way to the mound for CPP after Alsworth retired after the third. First on the bump was
Peter Bayer, then
Erik Trask,
Zach Williams,
Kohto Hasegawa, and
Sean Grebeck. As a staff, the Broncos' pitchers struck out more batters than that of the CSUMB squad, tallying 11 to the Otters' eight.
A pair of pitchers took the mound for the visitors in the contest after their starter went five.
The CPP squad did tally 11 hits in the contest, but the offensive production came too late to halt the Otters' momentum.
In the first inning, there were four runs scored by the CSUMB team, a double to left center opened up scoring, and then a single and subsequent fielding error brought three more home. In the second inning, they added another run to the board with a single up the middle.
The fourth saw the Broncos score two to pull in just three runs shy of the Otters.
Nic Hernandez reached on an error by the second baseman that allowed for
Caleb Romo to reach home. After that,
Michael Zidek singled and scored Hernandez to give CPP two.
The fifth and sixth saw the Otters add four more runs to take a 9-2 lead in the ballgame, but the Broncos scored in the bottom of six with
Ryan Webberley reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Romo.
Looking at the scoreboard, the only runs that came in the seventh, eighth, and beginning of the ninth inning were for the CSUMB team. 14 runs would cross for the Otters in the final innings as five singles, three doubles, one walk, and a Bronco error culminated in the scoreboard reading 23-3.
CPP did produce three runs in the bottom of the ninth as
Daniel Pitts stayed hot with a single to right center that scored
Alex Gaskin who reached via hit earlier. Webberley then walked after the bases got loaded, scoring
Thomas Berutto who smacked his second college hit to reach base.
The Broncos' final run came with
Michael Erb getting a single up the middle and scoring Hernandez. The final score for the game read 23-6 Otters.
CPP will once again take the diamond on Tuesday as they head to Azusa Pacific to challenge the APU Cougars at their home field. The first pitch at the Cougar Baseball Field is set for 5 p.m.
