Active Bats Not Enough to Boost Broncos to Win

AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team dropped its final non-conference game of the regular season 4-1 to the Azusa Pacific Cougars on Tuesday evening. The contest took place at the Cougar Baseball Complex on APU's campus.

With the loss, the Broncos drop to a season tally of 21-11 heading into their final five weeks of conference play.

Starting on the mound for the Broncos, and drawing the loss, was Tyler Rowe. The loss was his first of the season and drops him to a 3-1 record. The CPP starter threw for 3.2 innings allowing seven hits and three runs to score, he also struck out one Cougar and allowed a walk.

The CPP offense was very active in the contest, tallying 13 hits in the game, outhitting the home team by two. Leading the way for the Broncos was the contest's designated hitter Caleb Romo who locked down three hits in four at bats.

Nabbing the win for the home team was Kale Morton. Morton was the Cougars' fifth pitcher to throw in the contest.

In the first inning, the hometown Cougars struck first, a single to left center allowed for the APU leadoff batter, who had walked, to score. The score stood at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth.

In the home half of the fourth inning, the Cougars padded their lead as a double to right center and a single up the middle scored two more Cougars to put the score at 3-0 in the home team's favor.

After Rowe's time on the bump, the Green and Gold turned the ball over to Peter Beattie. The sophomore transfer from UC Riverside dealt for two innings, allowing just three hits and one run to score. He tallied two strikeouts and a walk in his showing. The lone run that was scored off of Beattie was a homerun to left field.

Prior to the homerun for APU, the Broncos put one on the board with a wild pitch by the APU pitcher. Scoring on the play was Jacob Bernardy and advancing to third was Jared James.

In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs on the board, Zach Williams took the mound for the Green and Gold. The senior did a stellar job, allowing just one hit over the next 1.1 innings and totaling two strikeouts.

Taking the mound to start off the eighth was Wyatt Shackleford. In his fifth appearance on the season, the sophomore kept his Earned Run Average (ERA) flawless as he retired all three batters faced.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday, April 9 as they head north to Turlock to challenge the Stanislaus Warriors on their home field. The first pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
