Broncos Drop Game One of CCAA Tourney 6-2

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos baseball team dropped the first game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament 6-2 to the Chico State Wildcats.

With the loss, the Broncos now carry a 34-16 record on the season and the Wildcats improve to 32-19. The CPP squad will take on Cal State San Bernardino at 11 a.m. on Thursday in an elimination game.

With the best record in the conference heading into Wednesday's contest and holding a better head-to-head record against the North Division leading Pioneers, the Broncos earned the No. 1 seed. Chico State was the No. 6 seeded team heading into the game.

CPP's starting pitcher was Michael Koval. In Tuesday's banquet, the junior earned both a spot on the All-CCAA First Team and the Pitcher of the Year title. Koval dealt for 5.2 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and three earned runs to score.

Clayton Gelfand, the starter for the Wildcats, secured the win with a seven-inning, six-hit performance in which just two unearned runs scored.

In the second inning, the Wildcats scored on a single to third base as a CPP throwing error enabled their runner to score.

The fifth inning came with another two runners crossing for the Chico squad, a single through the left side and a single to third scored their pair and made the game 3-0.

The following inning had Chico's fourth run score with a single up the middle.

It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Broncos took their zero off the board. After a leadoff triple from Ryan Webberley, he was sent home with a sacrifice fly from Jared James.

After that first run, Jason Padlo reached on a fielder's choice in which the Wildcat's shortstop tagged out Jacob Bernardy at second for the inning's final out. On the play Chris Stratton scored and gave Padlo his RBI.

In the eighth and ninth innings, the Wildcats posted another two runs. A fielding error in the CPP infield and a single to center allowed for runs No. 5 and No. 6 to score.
