POMONA, Calif. – With the start of the 2016 season arriving on Thursday, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team is set to play four matches in a five-day stretch in Hawaii this week.
With five seniors departing from last year's roster, the 2016 Broncos' lineup features seven newcomers. CPP does not have any seniors this season but the junior class consists of five Broncos –
Alexandria Bollier,
Samantha Figueroa,
Deanna Blaine,
Alina Smith and
Alexandra Gresham.
Head coach
Rosie Wegrich enters her 25th season with the Broncos and she's collected 405 wins for CPP, raising her career total to 734. Along the sidelines, she is joined by assistant coach
Brianna Gonzales and program associate
Maria Dennis.
The Broncos went 17-13 overall last year with a 12-8 record in conference play, helping the program advance to the first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament.
CPP will open up the 2016 campaign against BYU Hawaii, a team that posted similar numbers in 2015. The Seasiders collected an overall mark of 15-13 while going 13-7 in the PacWest Conference. First serve on Thursday is set for 9 p.m. Pacific (7 p.m. HST).
The other three opponents for the Broncos this week are also part of the PacWest. CPP will battle Chaminade on Friday at 9:30 p.m. PST (7:30 p.m. HST). The Silverswords posted a 19-9 mark last year and swept nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage last week.
Saturday's matchup in Honolulu will put the Broncos up against Hawaii Pacific. In 2016, the Sharks finished 15-13 overall after starting the year with a dominating 10-3 mark.
CPP will finish its series of Hawaii matchups with a Monday showdown against Hawaii Hilo. It will be the season opener for the Vulcans, a team that went 11-12 overall last year but went above .500 at home with a 7-6 mark.
