CPP Hosts Two Champions in Opening Week

POMONA, Calif. – In hosting Point Loma and Grand Valley State to start the season, Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer is not backing down from the challenge ahead.

First-year head coach Jay Mason and the Broncos will take on Point Loma on Thursday at 7 p.m. under the lights at Kellogg Field. Free posters will be provided to all CPP fans. Although the Sea Lions have won the last two PacWest titles, they still are regarded as the second-most notable opponent of the week for CPP.

On Sunday, the Broncos will host defending national champion and preseason No. 1 Grand Valley State for an 11 a.m. kickoff. The Lakers' season opener will take place on Friday at Cal State San Bernardino.

After the homestand this week, CPP will proceed with four road matches before the next home date on Sept. 23 – one day after Fall Quarter begins for the Broncos.

CPP women's soccer posted a 9-7-2 record in 2015 as the team went 6-5-1 in conference play.

Although there are only four seniors on this year's roster, the Broncos' top three point-getters from 2015 are returning: forwards Daisy Duran and Sydney Yates along with midfielder Hailey James. Duran and Yates received All-Conference Second Team honors last year while James earned California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Honorable Mention status.

Natalie Di Angelo collected All-Conference recognition as a freshman in 2015 and the Torrance native returns as a sophomore to lead the CPP defense once again.

Joining Mason along the sidelines will be assistant coach Katie Smith and program associate Daniel Richards
