Martinez Goal Lifts CPP to 1-0 Win Over Gators

POMONA, Calif. – Earning its sixth shutout of the season, Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer defeated the first-place San Francisco State Gators on Friday 1-0.

A first-half goal from Kevin Martinez held up as the eventual game-winning score. A junior from Palmdale, Martinez curled a free kick inside the left post for his first goal as a Bronco.

The win moves CPP to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while SFSU falls to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 through league action.

The Broncos outshot the Gators 11-6 on Friday while the two teams combined for nine yellow cards.

In the 33rd minute, SFSU's Marco Ruelas was issued a caution and that set up the decisive free kick. Martinez lined up from about 22 yards out on the left side and curled the ball inside the near post. That put the Broncos ahead 1-0 and that was all they needed.

The CPP defense played well, limiting the Gators to zero shots through the final 10 minutes of play. Broncos' goalkeeper Jason Trejos only need to make two saves as the backline kept the pressure to a minimum.

The Broncos will return to action on Sunday with a 11:30 a.m. home match against Cal State Monterey Bay. The first 100 CPP students will receive a free tumbler courtesy of University Housing Services.
