Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CPP Tops Otters for 3rd-Straight Victory

POMONA, Calif. – With a 1-0 win Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team has moved up to second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

The Broncos have now won the last three games by a 1-0 margin and improve their overall record to 7-2-1. At 3-1-0 in league play, CPP only trails Cal State San Bernardino (3-0-1). CPP will challenge the Coyotes on Wednesday in San Bernardino.

Sergi Monso tallied the Broncos' only score on Sunday, raising his season total to seven as he remains in a tie atop the CCAA goals leaderboard.

Monso's goal Sunday came at the 86:09 mark when he curled a free kick into the upper left corner of the net to break the scoreless tie. Although the Otters only outshot CPP by a slim 11-8 margin, Monso's score represented the only shot on goal for the Broncos on Sunday.

Ten cautions were issued between the two squads and they competed with only 10 players each through the final 37 minutes. CPP's Eshel Chardon received a second yellow card and subsequent red at the 49:03 mark and Monterey Bay's Alejandro Arreola earned the same sequence of cards at the 52:31 mark.

CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos made two saves to help preserve the Broncos' shutout. A pivotal stop came in the 47th minute when Cameron DeJong advanced into the box with a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie. Trejos cut down the angle and the shot deflected off the netminder and out of harm's way.

So far, the Broncos are 5-1-1 at Kellogg Field this year. They'll go on the road this week with Wednesday's 3 p.m. contest at CSUSB and then Sunday's 2 p.m. matchup at Chico State.
