Broncos Dealt 3-0 Defeat by Toros Saturday

CARSON, Calif. - Despite a 14-kill performance from Alexandra Gresham, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

The Broncos, now 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), will return to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. road contest at Chico State. CPP is halfway through a stretch of four-consecutive road matches.

Gresham shined for the Broncos on Saturday, committing just two errors on the attack with 14 kills to go along with a .444 hitting percentage. Alina Smith totaled 30 assists while Samantha Figueroa led the digs category with 19.

The Toros took the first set 25-20, captured the second frame 25-22, and then managed to hold on for the 26-24 result in the third set.

CPP held an 11-8 lead early in the opening frame after Desi Martin knocked in a kill to establish the three-point margin. Dominguez Hills put together a 6-0 run before a kill from Andrea Bosnic snapped the host team's momentum.

The Broncos pulled within 22-20 but the Toros captured the final three points to take the 1-0 lead in sets.

CPP fell behind 20-13 in the second set but rallied to make it a close contest. The Broncos received consecutive kills from Karah Griffiths and Gresham to trim the gap to 23-22 but Dominguez Hills finished with the 25-22 result.

The third set featured seven lead changes as the two squads battled tough. CPP trailed at one point 20-18 but built up momentum with Deanna Blaine collecting a kill that put the Broncos ahead 23-21. CPP had a set point at 24-22 but the Toros rallied for four-consecutive points to wrap up the 26-24 frame and the 3-0 victory.
