SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Already with four game-winning goals this year,
Sergi Monso collected No. 5 on Wednesday.
Similarly to Sunday's match at home against Cal State Monterey Bay's, today's road contest at Cal State San Bernardino progressed into the final stages with a 0-0 score. Earning a penalty kick opportunity in the 83rd minute, Monso knocked in his eighth score of the season. He continues to lead the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in goals.
With the win, CPP takes over first place in the conference standings. The Broncos are 8-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league play. Meanwhile, CSUSB falls into second place at 3-1-1 in CCAA action.
It marks the fourth-consecutive win for the Broncos and all four have been by a 1-0 margin. CPP now has eight shutouts this year and against the Coyotes Wednesday, the Broncos' backline kept the pressure off goalkeeper
Jason Trejos as he only needed to make one save.
The CPP offense gained early momentum in the first half, earning four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play. Unfortunately for the Broncos, they couldn't find the back of the net with those opportunities.
Along with
Kevin Martinez and Monso tallying two shots apiece,
Luis Najera Jr. also helped put pressure on the CSUSB defense as he totaled a team-high three shots.
The Broncos and Coyotes combined for 25 fouls during the match but only one caution was issued. It was handed out to CSUSB's Humberto Salcedo in the 15th minute.
The Broncos will return to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. road match at Chico State.
