POMONA, Calif. – After ending its opening week of play with a 2-2 draw against the defending national champion, Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer will look to carry that momentum into this Thursday's road match at Cal Baptist. Kickoff time has been moved to 1:30 p.m.
Last week, the Broncos dropped a 2-1 result to Point Loma in the season opener. CPP elevated its play on Sunday though, rallying to tie No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State through 110 minutes of action.
There are two non-conference matches remaining before the Broncos begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Sept. 16. Along with this Thursday's game at CBU, CPP will travel to take on another PacWest challenger – Azusa Pacific – on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
The Lancers of CBU have had a pair of tough results to start the season. In the season opener, CBU lost to Chico State 2-1 in double overtime. Two days later, the Lancers dropped a 1-0 result to Cal State Monterey Bay. Although CPP and CBU have played each other nine times in program history, the last meeting was all the way back in 2006.
The Broncos put together a complete team effort on Sunday at Kellogg Field. Trailing the defending national champion Grand Valley State 1-0 with 13 minutes left in regulation, CPP tallied the equalizer and battled the Lakers to a 1-1 draw. On the scoring play, a cross caromed loose in the box and junior
Stephanie Rodriguez hammered the ball into the back of the net.
