RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Despite outshooting Cal Baptist 23-18, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Lancers on Thursday afternoon.
All three scores came in the first half as the CBU offense didn't waste any time. The Broncos' attack created steady pressure but the Lancers' goalkeeper Sara Escobedo collected nine saves to preserve the shutout.
With an 0-2-1 record, CPP will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 for a 7 p.m. road match at Azusa Pacific (0-1-1).
CBU opened Thursday's scoring with a goal at the 12:12 mark. After a goal kick reached Jordan Dow, who sent the ball to the back of the net to give the host squad a 1-0 edge.
In the 34th minute, the Broncos put together a promising scoring chance. At the top of the box,
Lauren Miller ripped a shot that Escobedo punched away over the crossbar. The CPP offense was turned away on the resulting corner kick by
Tori Tappero.
The next two goals for the Lancers came from Justene Kesterson at the 38:30 mark and Rebecca Romero at 40:40.
The Broncos rallied for a pair of chances early in the second half as well. Shot attempts in rapid succession from
Tasha Inong and
Sierra Molina were both saved by Escobedo as the 3-0 score held up. CPP finished with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks but the visitors came up empty on all six opportunities.
