AZUSA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team secured a 1-0 road win on Tuesday, defeating PacWest opponent Azusa Paciifc.
It marked the Broncos' first shutout of 2016 and also the first win for first-year head coach
Jay Mason. CPP now carries a 1-2-1 record into the start of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday. The Broncos travel up to play Sonoma State and Humboldt State this weekend.
The Broncos' upcoming matchup at Sonoma State on Friday will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
Sophomore
Sydney Yates, a Vista native, scored the game's only goal on Tuesday night in Azusa. Dribbling up the left side and past a Cougars' defender, Yates lifted a close-range shot over the head of APU goalkeeper Sarah Klinkenberg and into the back of the net. That score came at the 14:58 mark and it held up as the eventual game winner. It marks the first goal of the year for Yates and the fourth of her CPP career.
Both squads played fairly even in terms of scoring chances. APU finished with a slight 9-8 advantage in shots and earned 10 corner kicks as compared to CPP's four. Junior goalkeeper
Ricki Ives collected five saves, including one in the final minute on a header from the Cougars' Hayley Williamson. The result marks the 18th career shutout for Ives.
