POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team tallied their second straight win and third straight home win on Saturday night, downing first-place Chico State 63-60 in Kellogg Arena.
The Broncos (5-10, 3-8 CCAA) were led by
William Christmas, who finished the night with 13 points along with seven rebounds while
Henry Cornelious totaled 10 points.
Freshman
Riley Schaefer started things for the Broncos with a three-pointer, and from that point, the Broncos never trailed. Schaefer finished with nine points, going 3-of-3 from behind the arc, and a game high eight rebounds.
The Broncos led by as many as 14-points in the first half, using a 13-2 run to pull away from the visitors. CPP shot 55 percent from the field, including 62 percent in the second half, while holding the Wildcats (16-3, 9-2) to only 33 percent in the game.
Jordan Ogundiran added nine points for the Broncos while
Justin Young finished with eight points and
Daylan Lawrence and
Jeremy Dennis each tallied seven.
Chico kept the game close in the second half, coming within one-point with 4:59 left to play. After that, the Broncos hit eight straight free throws with Ogundiran and Cornelious each making four attempts to seal the victory.
The Broncos next game will be back on the road as they head north for match ups with Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay.
