LA JOLLA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped a four-set match on the road against UC San Diego on Friday, losing 3-1 (25-18, 28-30, 20-25, and 15-20) as the Tritons completed the series sweep.
With the loss, the Broncos move to 8-10 overall on the year while going 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Broncos jumped out to a lead early, winning the first set 25-18. Tied 12-12 in the set, CPP used a 6-1 run to break away from the Tritons with
Alina Smith tallying two kills during that span.
Three Broncos registered double-digits in kills with
Alexandra Gresham leading the way with 15 kills.
Andrea Bosnic followed with 13 kills while
Jenna Goldsberry finished with 10 kills on the night.
UCSD out hit the Broncos, holding an attacking percentage of .228, compared to CPP's .176.
In the second set, CPP battled with the Tritons throughout the set, forcing 13 ties in total. Down 23-24, the Broncos fought off five set points, eventually taking the lead at 28-27 before three straight points from UCSD tied the match.
The Tritons jumped out to a quick advantage in the third set, winning 8-1 before eventually taking their largest lead at 12-4. The Broncos climbed back, bringing the match to within four points at 24-20 but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
Smith finished the night with a team-high 43 assists while
Alexandria Bollier collected a match-high 22 digs in the backline.
The Broncos return to action tomorrow night as they travel for a rematch with Cal State San Marcos. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
