SAN MARCOS – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team evened the season series against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday night, downing the Cougars 3-2 (25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 17-25, and 15-10) on the road in a California Collegiate Athletic Association matchup.
The win improves the Broncos to 9-10 overall on the year while going 5-6 in the CCAA. CPP also avenged a five-set loss the Broncos took at home against the Cougars just two weeks ago.
The Broncos jumped ahead early, taking the first set 25-19 as they earned a dominating .439 hitting percentage during the set. With a 20-19 lead, CPP closed out the set earning the final five points to seal the set win.
Alina Smith orchestrated an offense that posted a .224 hitting percentage, setting a career-high 56 assists in the process. Saturday's match was the second time this season she has recorded 50-plus assists.
Five Broncos tallied double-digits in kills with
Kristen Hamlin leading the way with 16 total kills followed by
Alexandra Gresham with 15 and
Jenna Goldsberry with 14 kills.
After dropping the second set, the Broncos found themselves trailing again in the third, 12-11. Using an 8-3 run, CPP pulled away from the Cougars to take the lead 2-1 once again.
Also contributing on the offensive side was
Andrea Bosnic and
Desi Martin who finished with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Also finishing with a career night was
Alexandria Bollier who collected a career-high 32 digs to lead the backline. Bosnic added 18 digs while
Samantha Figueroa added 13 digs of her own.
Finding the match tied once again, the Broncos jumped out to a quick start in the final frame, breaking a 4-3 deficit with four straight points. As the Cougars climbed to within two points of the Broncos, 12-10, back to back kills by Hamlin and Bosnic sealed the victory for CPP.
The Broncos will return to the road next week as they play one match on Saturday, October 21
st at Cal State San Bernardino.
