Najera and Broncos Down Humboldt State 3-0

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer picked up their second straight win in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday, defeating Humboldt State 3-0 at Kellogg Field.

With the win, the Broncos improve to 9-3 overall on the year and 5-2 in the CCAA. CPP has now outscored their opponent's 7-0 in the last two games.

"To get three points this late in the season is crucial, the CCAA is one of the best conferences in the country," said Head Coach Adam Reeves. "It was a hot, dry day and getting to play some different guys and get others some rest is great for us as we get ready for Sunday."

Luis Najera kicked things off just after the 10-minute mark in the first half, driving the ball past the middle of the field before floating the ball from outside the box just past the keeper to jump ahead 1-0.

The Broncos tallied 12 shots with five on target while holding the Jacks to only five shots on the day. One of HSU's shots landed at the hand of diving keeper Jason Trejos who kept the lead with the Broncos heading into the half.

In the second half, the Broncos added to their lead as Kevin Martinez took a corner kick into the box, finding Nadeer Ghantous who tapped the ball in for his second goal of the season.

"Luis started things off with a great goal in the first half that sort of settled us down. He has put in a lot of hard work and it was a great reward for him to get two goals today."

Najera scored his second goal of the day, sixth on the year, in the 70th minute taking the ball to the inside corner of the box before sneaking the ball under the Humboldt State defender.

"Jason and the rest of the backline did a phenomenal job today, picking up the shutout."

The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Sunday, Oct. 8, as they host Sonoma State in the CCAA contest set to begin at 2 p.m.
