Late Goal Lifts Broncos Ahead of Sonoma State 2-1

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team won their third straight contest on Sunday as they defeated visiting Sonoma State 2-1 at Kellogg Field.

With a 10-3 record overall, going 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Broncos remain as one of the top teams in the league.

"Like Friday three points is three points, as bad as our first half was our second half was that much better," said Head Coach Adam Reeves.

Sonoma State struck first, scoring with less than five minutes to go in the first half.

The Broncos constantly pressured the Seawolves throughout the day, notching 13 shots on goal out of 27 shots taken for their highest mark of the season.

"To get off 27 shots shows the perseverance and the drive of this group. Our few adjustments at halftime and the perseverance of this team, which I was really proud of, proved to the difference in the second half."

CPP tied the match back up in the 75th minute as William Johnson Des Bordes sent a cross into the box, finding Luis Najera for the score.

Sergi Monso totaled a match-high nine shots while Najera finished with seven shots. The Broncos only allowed four shots in the second half while tallying 16 of their own.

"Kobe and Dante Medina came in and were super impactful, to have to push and try and equalize without giving up a shot on goal was a collective defensive effort."

The Broncos took their first lead of the match with less than four minutes to play as Cyro Oliveria scored the game-winner after taking a pass into the box, fighting off one defender before spinning through two more as he sent the ball past the keeper from three yards out.

"Ultimately, we were a complete team for 90 minutes and it paid off. As we move on we look forward to traveling north to play a very good Chico and Stanislaus team."

The Broncos will face Chico State on Oct. 13 before continuing their road trip to Stanislaus State on Oct. 14.
