POMONA – Behind a monster night from
William Christmas and
Jordan Ogundiran, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team toppled California Collegiate Athletic Association favorite Chico State 83-79 in a double overtime thriller at Kellogg Arena.
Christmas led the Broncos (5-1, 2-0 CCAA) with a game-high 31 points, the highest point total of his career. He finished 11-of-15 from the field and added a team-high seven rebounds and two steals.
Both teams remained tightly contested throughout the night with the highest lead for both teams being only seven points.
Down 59-57 with 34 seconds left to play in the game, Christmas charged the paint, throwing up a layup to send the game into the first overtime period.
Behind Christmas was Ogundiran who collected 26 points while
Quentin Taylor finished with nine points and
Phoenix Shackelford ended with eight points.
Getting things started for the Broncos in overtime was Taylor who knocked down two big threes to give the Broncos a six-point lead with three minutes to play.
The Wildcats fought back with a three-pointer of their own along with four free throws before a last-second layup tied the game, once again, at 68-68, heading into the second overtime.
The Broncos shot 43 percent from the field while holding the fourth-ranked offense in the CCAA to a shooting percentage of 35 percent, shooting 24 percent from three-point range.
Tied 73-73, Shackelford hit two free throws to give the Broncos the lead for the remainder of the game.
Chico outrebounded the Broncos 46-41, collecting 18 offensive rebounds but only managed 12 second-chance points while CPP finished with 20 points off of turnovers.
The Wildcats climbed back to within one point before another three by Taylor with 1:19 to play gave the Broncos a four-point lead. Shackelford finished three-for-four from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the victory for his team.
The Broncos return to Kellogg Arena on Saturday, Dec. 2, as they take on Humboldt State at 7:30 p.m.
