Broncos Drop Twin Bill to First-Place Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – In their first action against the North Division, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped the first two games of the series against first-place Chico State 7-3, 3-2 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Broncos move to 13-12 overall on the season and 9-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Wildcats improve to 14-0 in the CCAA, 21-4 overall.
 
Game One: CPP 3, CSUC 7
 
Jeff Bain started things off on the mound for the Broncos, pitching seven innings and giving up nine hits and two earned runs while totaling five strikeouts.
 
Chico State scored early in the first inning with an RBI single and followed it up again in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
 
CPP's early run came in the second inning after a solo homerun by Daniel Pitts put the Broncos on the board.
 
The Broncos took their first lead in the seventh inning as Bryce Graddy scored on a fielding error followed by a by single down the right field line by Brennan McKenzie to bring in Jacob Bernardy, giving the Broncos a 3-2 lead.
 
Chico State did a majority of their damage in the final inning of the game, tying the game at 3-3 before ending on a walk-off grand slam.
 
Game Two: CPP 2, CSUC 3
 
Game two featured much less action at the plate for both teams as Pitts scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning, doubling to center field to bring McKenzie home. Pitts later came around to score after a wild pitch as the Broncos took a 2-0 lead.
 
Henry Omana was the starting pitcher for CPP, throwing 4 2/3 innings with six hits, three runs and three strikeouts. Ryan Alsworth pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief, giving up only two hits with three strikeouts as well.
 
Chico State found a way to answer the Broncos in the bottom half of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a double to right field before taking the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single.
 
The Broncos will close out the three game series against Chico tomorrow with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
