CHICO, Calif. – Daniel Pitts tallied two home runs including an eighth-inning grand slam to lift the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to an 8-7 win over Chico State, closing out the three-game road series on Sunday afternoon.
Pitts started things off in the third inning, hitting a solo homer to right field for the first score in the game.
Chico State answered quickly with a six-run third inning of their own, led by a two-RBI single by Dillion Kelley as the Wildcats jumped ahead 6-1.
CPP's next score came in the seventh inning with another solo homerun, this time by
Frankie Nogales.
The Broncos made their big push in the eighth inning, scoring two runs on RBI-singles by
Sean Grebeck and Nogales before Pitts put CPP ahead for good with his second homer of the day.
Pitts finished with two hits and five RBIs, while Nogales also had two hits with two RBIs and Grebeck was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run.
Matthew Grier picked up his first win of the year, pitching one inning with two strikeouts while
Peter Beattie notched his second save, giving up only one hit in two innings.
The Broncos will return to Scolinos Field next Saturday, Mar. 25, as they welcome CCAA North Division opponent Stanislaus State for a three-game series.
