SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team had a rough start to the series with Cal State Monterey Bay, dropping Saturday's doubleheader 3-1 and 4-3 at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Broncos move to 15-16 overall on the year and 11-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while CSUMB improved to 19-10, 12-6 CCAA.
Game One: CPP 1, CSUMB 3
Jeff Bain started on the mound for CPP, pitching six full innings. He finished with six hits, two earned runs, and four strikeouts, taking his second loss of the season to move to 3-2 on the year.
Jacob Bernardy brought in the only run of the game for the Broncos in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing
Daniel Pitts to cross home plate after reaching base with a walk.
The Otters scored first in the third inning before regaining the lead in the fifth and adding one more run in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Game Two: CPP 3, CSUMB 4
The Broncos found a little more offense in game two of the doubleheader, scoring in the second inning after a throwing error by CSUMB allowed Pitts to score.
Tied 1-1, CPP added two more runs in the second inning after a groundout by
Nic Hernandez brought in
Chris Stratton and a single by Pitts scored
Frankie Nogales.
Kyle Dohy had one of his more effective days on the mound, throwing six innings with only four hits, one run, and a season-high 11 strikeouts.
The Broncos held the lead for a majority of the game as the Otters fought back, scoring one run in each of the final three innings of play. CSUMB opening the bottom of the ninth inning working three straight walks before a single ended the game 4-3.
The Broncos and Otters will close out the series tomorrow at 11 a.m. with game three at the Otter Sports Complex.
