POMONA, Calif. – Coming off their biggest series win of the season, Cal Poly Pomona baseball takes on Cal State San Marcos this weekend with a four-game series set to start at Scolinos Field on Friday.
Winning 2-1 in the final game of the series after a walk-off single, the Broncos took three games from CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego last weekend, sweeping both games on the road as well.
The Broncos (25-10, 17-11 CCA) are tied with UCSD in conference wins with the Tritons holding the advantage with three fewer losses. CPP remains in second place in the south standings and third overall in the conference.
Continuing to find success at the plate, the Broncos have upped their team batting average to .302. Four players rank in the top 20 in the CCAA in BA with
Jason Padlo (.385) fifth,
Nic Hernandez (.353) and
Daniel Pitts (.353) tied for 13
th and
Cody Martin (.343) at 19
th.
Allowing three or fewer runs in three games last week has also lowered the team's combined ERA to 4.26, ranking sixth in the league.
Jeff Bain and
Henry Omana are the conference strikeout leaders, totaling 66 and 65 strikeouts respectively.
After throwing six hitless innings against UCSD, Omana has lowered his ERA to a team-best 3.05 while improving to 3-5 overall. Bain leads the team in wins with five, holding a 5-2 record this season.
Chris Stratton continues his strong senior season, leading the team in hits with 50, runs scored with 39 and stolen bases with 16. On the opposite end, freshman
Brennan McKenzie has had a tremendous breakout season with the Broncos, recording the second most RBIs with 28.
The Broncos will travel for a doubleheader on Saturday at CSUSM before returning home to close at the series on Sunday.
About CSU San Marcos:
-The Cougars sit at the bottom of the South standings with a record of 15-23 overall, going 5-21 in conference play.
-Despite their record, CSUSM ranks third in the conference in batting average at .300, and have scored the third most runs in the conference at 231.
-San Marcos also ranks fifth in the CCAA in total hits at 368.
-Troubles on the mound have been consistent as the Cougars rank last in ERA at 7.55.
