STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team won their 12
th straight game of the season, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 6-3 in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Postseason Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark on Wednesday.
Seeded second in the tournament, the Broncos scored in the opening inning without tallying a hit as
Chris Stratton got on base with a walk.
Henry Omana started on the mound for the CPP, tossing seven innings with four hits, one earned run and seven strikeouts to pick up his sixth win of the year.
After the Otters tied things up in the second inning,
Daniel Pitts crushed a ball to deep right field for his ninth home run, scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Named a CCAA All-Conference First-Team recipient, Pitts finished with three RBIs on the day.
The Broncos scored two more runs in the seventh inning as
Jacob Bernardy bunted, scoring
Frankie Nogales while
Cody Martin, another CCAA First-Team honoree, followed up with a single to make the game 6-1.
Wyatt Shackleford picked up his fourth save of the year, throwing one scoreless inning with one strikeout to help his team advance to the next round.
The Broncos will face off against the winner of Stanislaus State vs. UC San Diego tomorrow evening with a tentative start time of 7 p.m.
