Wild Finish Keeps Broncos in Winners Bracket

STOCKTON, Calif. – Just a couple days after being named the CCAA Freshman of the Year, outfielder Brennan McKenzie proved why as he came up with a walk-off hit in the 11th inning to defeat UC San Diego 9-8 and keep the Broncos in the winner bracket of the conference tournament championship.

Now on a 13-game winning streak, the No. 2 Broncos will take on top seeded Chico State in a battle of the undefeated at 11 a.m. at Banner Island Ballpark with the winner advancing to the CCAA Championship game.

UCSD jumped ahead of the Broncos early, scoring three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Broncos took one run back as Daniel Pitts hit a single to score Jacob Bernardy in the bottom of the inning.

Jeff Bain started on the mound for the Broncos, throwing 7 2/3 innings with nine hits, six runs and six strikeouts. Peter Beattie pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief while giving up only one run on one hit and a strikeout.

After the Tritons scored two more runs in the fifth, it was once again Pitts who put the Broncos on the board, launching a ball to deep right field for a two-RBI home run. In the tournament, Pitts is now 3-for-9 with six RBIs and two home runs.

McKenize earned his first RBI of the night in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring the Broncos to within two runs at 6-4.

Down by two runs in the ninth inning with two outs, CPP tied the game with back-to-back RBI singles by Chris Stratton and Cody Martin, sending the game into extras.

Once again needing to score two runs to stay alive after UCSD scored twice in the top of the 10th, the Broncos found a way to get on base. Jason Padlo and Nic Hernandez earned back-to-back walks while Matt Manskar singled with a bunt to load the bases. Alex Gaskin reached base after being hit by a pitch, scoring Padlo in the process before Stratton tied the game by earning a bases-loaded walk.

After holding the Tritons scoreless in the 11th, Padlo singled to get on base with one out in the inning. With the bases loaded once again, McKenzie bounced a ball just over the shortstop's head to score the winning run and keep the Broncos undefeated in tournament play.

Picking up the win was Ryan Alsworth who improved to 4-1 on the season, tossing a hitless 11th inning with one walk and one strikeout.

Hernandez finished with three hits while Pitts tallied three RBIs and Stratton and McKenzie had two RBIs each.
