STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team saw their run in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Postseason Tournament come to an end on Friday night, falling to UC San Diego 7-3 in a rematch from last night's game at Banner Island Ballpark.
Cody Martin started the night off with a one out double in the first inning, coming around to score after a single by Nic Herandez to take a 1-0 lead.
UCSD tied things up in the bottom of the first inning, before scoring on five straight innings including two runs in the second and two runs in the third.
The Broncos got one run back in the third inning as
Daniel Pitts grounded to third base, scoring
Chris Stratton for his seventh RBI of the tournament.
Jeremy Taylor took the loss for CPP, falling to 4-2 overall on the year as he tossed 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
Cade Kirkemo and
Andre Henson finished the game in relief without allowing a hit. Kirkemo threw 2 1/3 innings with one walk and one strikeout while Henson finished the last inning with two strikeouts and a walk.
Looking to bounce back, the Broncos added another run in the sixth inning as
Bryce Graddy knocked a ball over the shortstop into left field, scoring
Brennan McKenzie to come within four runs.
As a team, the Broncos collected eight hits with Pitts and Graddy both tallying two hits each.
Cal Poly Pomona will now wait for the NCAA West Region Selection on Sunday to determine whether or not they receive a bid to the West Region Tournament slated to begin May 18. With the top six ranked teams advancing, Pomona was seventh entering the tournament, collecting a big win over No. 4 UC San Diego.
