BILLINGS – A late goal by No.3 Simon Fraser gave the 10th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team their first loss of the season, falling 2-1 in the final day of the Rimrock Classic hosted by MSU-Billings on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a 90 minute battle between two very competitive teams in the West Region," said Head Coach
Adam Reeves. "I felt like we controlled most of the game but they are a well-organized well-coached team and we couldn't capitalize."
Down 1-0 with less than five minutes to go, the Broncos tied the game as
Sergi Monso scored his seventh goal of the season, this time taking a free kick from 25-yards out, curving just past the wall of defenders to find the back of the net.
Moments later however, SFU was back on the offensive, sending a through ball to Adam Jones who took one touch before scoring the game winner, avenging a shootout loss against CPP last season in the semifinals of the NCAA West Region Tournament.
The Broncos finished with seven shots, three of them landing on target while SFU tallied eight shots and four on goal.
In the first half, Simon Fraser took the lead in the 34
th minute, heading a ball five yards out after a cross from the outside.
"Giving up the goal in the first half changed the complexity of the game and we had to chase. Our guys never gave up continued to battle and we were awarded with the equalizer," added Reeves. "Unfortunately we shifted off and they capitalized."
Jimmie Villalobos and Monso led the Broncos with two shots each while Monso finished with two shots on goal.
"It was a great game to prepare for the CCAA and we look forward to regrouping and getting ready for two competitive games at home," finished Reeves.
The Broncos kick off California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday, as they host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
