Broncos Handed 1-0 Loss to CSU Dominguez Hills

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team battled throughout the night against Cal State Dominguez Hills, falling 1-0 to start conference play on Friday night at Kellogg Field.

The Broncos move to 4-2-0 overall on the season while the Toros improve to 4-1-0 overall.

"It was a tough one to lose, it stings, I think it stings for the whole group when you play the way we did tonight and come away with a loss," said Head Coach Adam Reeves.

CPP pressured Dominguez Hills throughout the night, tallying 21 shots overall. Sergi Monso led the Broncos with six shots while Jimmie Villalobos had five and Matthew Perez finished with four shots, outshooting the Toros by a margin of 15-13.

"We had 21 shots and we had very good shots, and we were unlucky with hitting the post and the crossbar but we are who we are. That is a very good, balanced team, they are good in the attack and good defensively and it was an unlucky night for us."

After a scoreless first half, the Broncos continued to find ways to move the ball up the field as Perez launched a shot, hitting just off the post. A few moments later, the Broncos had another opportunity as the shot attempt landing just off target as it slid past the corner of the goal.

"It was a good soccer game between two great soccer teams at any level and unfortunately tonight it didn't go our way. I think the team did a very good job sticking to the game plan, attacking how we talked, and defend how we talked."

The Toros finally broke the scoreless tie in the 76th minute, scoring off a pass inside the box to Adam Vargas who made the finish for Dominguez Hills.

"I'm proud of the group, I have an older mature group that deals with adversity well and I have no doubt we will come out with vengeance on Sunday"

The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Sunday, Sept. 17 as they host Cal State Los Angeles at 2 p.m.
