POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team downed Seattle Pacific in overtime on Tuesday night as
Natalie Di Angelo scored the golden goal to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory at Kellogg Field.
Four minutes into the overtime period,
Daisy Duran sent a corner into the box. After being initially headed by a Seattle Pacific defender,
Samantha Putnam controlled the ball, passing to Di Angelo who finished with a powerful shot in the bottom corner of the goal.
"I am very proud of the girls' resiliency this evening after a tough loss on Saturday," said Head Coach
Jay Mason. "They displayed a great deal of heart tonight against one of the top teams in the country."
In the first half, the Broncos claimed a quick lead, scoring in the 20
th minute after Putnam fed a through ball to
Stephanie Rodriguez who dribbled past the left side of the keeper before finishing into an open net.
Seattle Pacific didn't trail for long, sending a free kick into the box before a quick pass to Julia Devere, who was able to finish for the Falcons.
"I thought we started well. SPU presented us with some challenges tactically and physically that we needed to address at halftime," continued Mason.
CPP tallied 15 shots including five on goal while holding SPU to eight shots in the game.
The Broncos began the second half with a quick scoring attempt after a cross landed just past the foot of Putnam.
With less than two minutes to go in the game, the Falcons had the game winning goal in the back of the net after a deflected shot went to Mickayla Mury who was called offside, sending the game to overtime.
"It was a hard fought game between two good teams. Great result for the girls tonight but we need to get back to improving tomorrow in preparation for a very difficult weekend of conference play."
The Broncos open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday, Sept. 15 as they host CSU Dominguez Hills at 4:30 p.m. at Kellogg Field.
