POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team began their California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a 4-0 stomping of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night at Kellogg Field.
The Broncos improved to 5-1-0 overall on the season while CSUDH drops to 0-4-0 overall.
It didn't take long for CPP to score as
Amanda Duran fed the ball through the middle of the box as
Stephanie Rodriguez beat a defender to the ball with a sliding kick into the back of the net during the eighth minute of play.
"Conference play is always difficult in the CCAA," said Head Coach
Jay Mason. "Tonight, we were able to rebound from a lack luster first half and finish multiple chances against an organized CSUDH squad."
The Broncos finished with 15 total shots, landing 10 on target while holding the Toros to only six shots, including only two in the second half.
After heading into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Broncos secured the victory, scoring three goals in the second half of play.
"I'm very happy we were able to give a number of our young players opportunities to experience the intensity and speed of this conference."
Samantha Putnam scored her second goal of the season in the 58
th minute, heading the ball into the middle of the net while the goalie was out of position.
Recording her first goal of the season,
Alison Hung ran into the box for a leaping header after a cross from
Ambria Pogue, giving CPP a 3-0 lead.
The final goal of the game happened in the 83
rd minute after an errant clearance by Dominguez Hills landed in the net for an own goal after a corner kick by CPP.
"Looking forward, we need to recover and prepare for a very good CSU Los Angeles team on Sunday."
The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Sunday, Sept. 17, for a matchup with CSU Los Angeles at 11:30 a.m.
