POMONA – In a fairly even battle throughout the day, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team edged out Cal State Los Angeles 2-1 for the first California Collegiate Athletic Association win of 2017 season on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 5-2-0 overall while going 1-1-0 in the CCAA.
Sergi Monso continued to shine offensively, scoring his first goal of the day, and his eighth of the season, in the 14
th minute of the game after taking a pass from
Jimmie Villalobos inside the box and finishing in the bottom left corner of the net.
"I'm very proud of the boys, I think this was one of the first games where we played a complete 90 minutes as one team," said Head Coach
Adam Reeves. "It was two of the top teams in the CCAA battling it out and it was a very even game as far as shots, possession, and we managed to capitalize on an unorthodox mistake by CSULA."
Both teams finished with 12 shots in the game with CSULA landing four shots on target and CPP with three shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles eventually tied things up in the 27
th minute, as CSULA snuck a pass into the middle of the box, allowing Julian Zamora to hit the back of the net for the equalizer.
After ending the first half 1-1, the Broncos tallied another goal as Villalobos once again fed the ball to Monso, this time a through ball to the middle of the field, allowing Monso to finish one on one with the keeper for his ninth goal of the year.
"Sergi was himself in front of the goal and I thought the defensive midfield of
Matthew Perez,
Kevin Martinez and
Cyro Oliveria was phenomenal today. They had a ton of work with this LA team and I feel also, the backline played their roles very well tonight."
Monso finished with a team high four shots while
Jose Garcia tallied three shots and
Jason Trejos collected three saves in goal.
The Broncos will be back on Kellogg Field next weekend as they welcome in CCAA opponents Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 22 and 24.
