POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team didn't skip a beat on offense, defeating Biola University 4-0 on Kellogg Field on Saturday night.
The Broncos (2-0-0) outshot the Eagles 25-2, landing 10 shots on target. CPP tallied six quick shots to open the game, three of them ending in saves.
"Before the game, we spoke about being more patient and more methodical about our play," said Head Coach
Adam Reeves. "They make it tough to score and they are a well-organized and well coached team. We were disciplined in most aspects and it showed in the results."
In the 25
th minute, senior
Matthew Perez finally broke the scoreless tie, taking a ball from 25 yards out, sending it just out of reach of the keeper as the ball landed in the upper corner of the net. The goal marked the second of the season for Perez who scored in Thursday's game against Azusa Pacific.
"We are started things off with a great goal and that forced Biola a little bit and made them play out of their comfort zone," continued Reeves.
The Broncos continued to pressure the Eagles throughout the first half, finishing with 14 total shots.
Sergi Monso finished with a team high six shots while Perez and
Jimmie Villalobos each had four shots in the game.
In the 65
th minute, defender
Nadeer Ghantous earned his first goal of the season, heading a cross from Monso into the bottom corner to give the Broncos a two goal lead.
Just moments later,
Dante Medina scored his first goal of the season with the help of Monso once again. Medina controlled the ball at the top of the box before sending it off a BU defender into the right side of the net.
"This group can be very balanced on the attack, scoring from different areas on the field which really helps us overall, teams can't focus on just one area."
The final goal of the game came in the 83
rd minute after Biola's keeper was issued a red card, forcing a penalty kick for CPP. Monso buried the ball in the bottom of the net for his third goal in two games.
"Happy overall with the shutout but we still have some areas to improve on defensively. We had some moments where we let up and they almost capitalized. This group is working hard every day because they have a desire to be successful and I have 30 guys who are being rewarded for their hard work," said Reeves.
The Broncos continue their home stand on Tuesday as they host Fresno Pacific on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Kellogg Field.
