POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team defeated the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds 4-2 on Tuesday night at Kellogg Field, remaining a perfect 3-0 on the year.
After collecting CCAA Player of the Week honors,
Sergi Monso continued to shine offensively, scoring two goals, bringing his season total to five.
Monso opened the scoring against the Sunbirds in the 22nd minute, heading a cross from
Jordan Jackmon in the box to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Broncos tallied 13 shots on the night with seven landing on target.
Luis Najera Jr., scored his first goal of the season, taking a pass from
Matthew Perez, dribbling past the keeper from five yards out.
CPP added to their lead moments later as Monso scored his second goal of the game, fighting past a defender in the box before finding the back of the net to take a 3-0 advantage.
Fresno Pacific made some noise in the second half, scoring their first goal in the 68th minute as the ball bounced off the post before rolling in. In the final five minutes of the game, FPU found another goal after a foul in the box gave them a penalty to make it 3-2.
With time winding down, Fresno Pacific made one final run to tie the game, getting off a shot just outside the box that landed in the hands of CPP's
Jason Trejos, who tallied three saves on the night.
As the Broncos countered the push from Fresno, CPP forced a penalty kick of their own in the final seconds of the game, as Perez knocked the ball just out of reach of the keeper for his third goal of the season.
CPP will have their first action on the road later this week as they travel to Billings, Mont., for two games against Montana State Billings on Friday, Sept., 8, and Simon Frasier on Sunday, Sept., 10.
