Broncos Win Third Straight, Defeat Otters 3-0

POMONA – Winning their third straight California Collegiate Athletic Association match, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team who dominated Cal State Monterey Bay, winning 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field.

The Broncos (7-2-0, 3-1-0 CCAA) earned their second straight shutout while Jimmie Villalobos led the offense with two goals on the day.

"Extremely pleased with the entire weekend, these are two opponents that could make the game extremely difficult if you don't play to your capability and the guys were up to the challenge and played well," said Head Coach Adam Reeves.

Villalobos opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, curving a free kick around the wall of defenders and landing in the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards out.

Just over 10 minutes later, Villalobos picked up his fifth goal of the season after a cross into the box from Patricio Yrizar landed perfectly in his path as he headed it passed the keeper.

"Very happy we were able to have two shutouts and go very deep into our bench and have some guys get quality minutes who have been working really hard in training."

In the opening minute of the second half, the Broncos offense broke through again as Ibrahima Diakite scored his first goal for the Broncos, collecting a long pass from the backline before beating the keeper one on one.

"Jimmie was fantastic today, great to see Ibrahima get his first career goal for CPP and the back six did a great job defensively."

As a team, the Broncos finished with 13 shots while the defense held the Otters to only five attempts in the match.

"CCAA doesn't get any easier from here on out, we hit the road for two big games and we look forward continuing to compete."

The Broncos will travel to UC San Diego on Friday, Sept. 29 and Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Sept. 30, for their first road conference matches of the season.
