BILLINGS – The offensive force of the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team was in full force on Friday afternoon, downing Montana State University – Billings 4-0 in their first road contest of the season.
With the win, the Broncos remain undefeated as they improve to 4-0 on the year. CPP has outscored their opponents 17-3, leading the California Collegiate Athletic Association in goals scored.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the 18
th minute of play as
Sergi Monso dove for a header in the box after a pass from
Matthew Perez for his sixth goal of the season.
"Proud of the group, after coming the long distance, playing in the tough environment and it being the home opener for MSU-Billings, we persevered and came away with the win," said Head Coach
Adam Reeves.
Closing out the first half with a 1-0 lead, the Broncos scored three more goals in the second half, to seal the victory.
The scoring continued in the 45
th minute as
Kevin Martinez took a free kick, landing at the feet of Monso who fed it
Jose Garcia for the goal.
The Broncos added a few more insurance goals as
Jimmie Villalobos and
Luis Najera Jr., both scored with in two minutes of each other. Perez earned his second assist of the day as he led Villalobos who beat the keeper one on one from 10 yards out.
Najera scored a breakaway goal after a pass from Monso, who tallied his six assists on the year, sliding the ball past the keeper.
"We have a quick turnaround but we are looking forward to the opportunity to play one the best teams in our region. We played them twice in the last year and have a good rivalry going, it will be a strong test for the team," said Reeves.
The Broncos return to action as they take on Simon Fraser on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. MT.
