SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team kicked off the 2017 NCAA West Region Volleyball Showcase with a win on Thursday night, defeating Academy of Art in four sets (25-15, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18).
In the opening set, both teams traded points back and forth to start the match as the Broncos held an 11-10 lead midway through. After that, it was all Broncos as CPP used a 14-5 run to close out the set and take an early 1-0 advantage.
Desi Martin led the Broncos on offense, collecting nine kills with six total blocks on the night. Following her was
Jenna Goldsberry and
Andrea Bosnic with eight kills each. Goldsberry finished with a team high .438 attacking percentage.
Academy of Art kept it close in the second set of the night, tying the match at 23-23. CPP claimed the final two points of the set off attack errors by the Knights to take a 2-0 lead.
Orchestrating the offense was
Alina Smith who collected 18 assists against the Knights while
Kay Powell added nine of her own. Leading the back row was
Samantha Figueroa and
Alexandria Bollier who tallied 13 and 10 digs respectively.
Academy of Art made the most noise in the third set, holding off the sweep with a 25-19 win.
In the fourth and final set of the night, CPP broke a 14-14 tie, scoring six straight points to pull away before tallying four of the final five points in the set to win 25-18.
The Broncos continue the West Region Showcase tomorrow afternoon as they take on Holy Names at 3:45 p.m., on the campus of San Francisco State.
