Broncos Shine on Defense, Defeat Cal State Los Angeles 53-38

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team continued to prove why they are the top defense in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, defeating Cal State Los Angeles 53-38 at Kellogg Arena on Saturday night.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    The Broncos got off to a slow start in the first quarter, falling behind 11-4 after the opening period.
-    CPP closed the gap in the second quarter after a last-second shot by Casey McWilliam made it 20-19 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
-    Defensively, the Broncos held Cal State Los Angeles to a shooting percentage of only 24 percent from the field, converting 13-of-55 attempts.
-    CPP took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 20-5 in the period. 
-    After CSULA scored the first basket of the quarter, the Broncos went on a 12-0 run, not allowing the Eagles to score for nearly eight minutes.
-    Leading by at least nine points throughout the fourth quarter, the Broncos held off the Golden Eagles to win, taking their largest lead of 17-points with seconds to play.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Jordyn Shane finished as the leading scorer for the Broncos, matching a season high 15 points while adding four rebounds.
-    Priscilla Brooks added nine points and six rebounds while Alyssa Benton grabbed a team-best eight rebounds with eight points.
-    Jackie Ricketson dished out seven assists on the night while contributing four points and five rebounds.

OUTSIDE THE BOX: 
-    With the top defense in the league, the Broncos have now held seven opponents to 50 points or less while holding three to under four points on the season.
-    The Broncos solidify their second-place spot in the CCAA standings as they pick up their second straight win.

COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will head back out on the road as they travel to the Bay Area to take on Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay beginning Friday, Jan. 26.
