POMONA, Calif. -- Brian Peek scored his fourth goal of the season (and his third this weekend) in the 20th minute and
Patricio Yrizar added a score in the 38th minute as the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team cruised to their seventh straight victory with a 2-0 win over No. 16 UC San Diego on Senior Day at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.
The Broncos (9-4 overall) have come within one point of Cal State L.A. for the top spot in the CCAA standings with four regular season matches to play, posting 21 points (a 7-1 mark in league action). The Tritons fell to 10-2-2 overall and sit in sixth place in the CCAA at 4-2-2 (14 points).
Right from the start, the host Broncos overwhelmed the Tritons, outshooting the visitors 14-1 through the first 45 minutes of action. The first of two CPP goals that came in the opening half was set up by a shot taken by
Eduardo Faria that was blocked by a UCSD defender, but the ball landed at the feet of Peek, who blasted his attempt into the right corner of the net to break the 0-0 tie at 19:45.
At 37:36, Yrizar, one of seven Cal Poly Pomona seniors honored prior to the game Sunday, scored his second goal of the year after Faria passed up to Peek, who used his heel to pass back to Yrizar who was streaking into the box unmanned. Yrizar then buried his shot into the left side of the net for the 2-0 Bronco lead.
The second half was a slight change of pace as both teams attempted three shots each, but neither would find the back of the net again, resulting in the 2-0 victory for the hosts.
Jakob Hansen made one save on his Senior Day. His counterpart, UCSD's Pedro Enciso, made four saves.
Prior to Sunday's contest, seven seniors were honored for their efforts on and off the field at Cal Poly Pomona --
Patricio Yrizar,
Skyler Gibbons-Stovall,
Eduard Lucas,
Ori Kenett,
Nadeer Ghantous,
Jakob Hansen and
Sergio Martinez.
Cal Poly Pomona will now hit the road for its final four matches of the regular season, beginning with a Friday afternoon matchup (a 12:30 pm start time) with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
