SEASIDE, Calif. -- Patricio Yrizar broke a scoreless tie in the 99th minute to lift the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside.
The win extends the Broncos' win streak to eight matches, rising to 10-4 overall, and clinches a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fifth straight season, moving to 8-1 in conference play. The Otters fell to 6-7 overall (4-5 CCAA).
The Broncos peppered CSUMB goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli with shot after shot all afternoon, including four in the overtime period, and finally it was a
Gabriel Castillo shot that ricocheted off Lomeli's body allowing Yrizar to sneak in and fire his game-winner into the back of the net at 98:50.
In all, CPP outshot CSUMB 19-5, including a 13-2 margin after halftime. Lomeli made a season-high 10 saves while CPP's
Jakob Hansen needed to make just one save which came in the 41st minute.
Eduardo Faria (five shots) and Castillo (four shots) combined for nine of the Broncos' 19 shots on the day.
Cal Poly Pomona will take on Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Sunday at 2:00 pm before wrapping up the regular season next weekend at Cal State L.A. on Thursday and at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
