Broncos Hang Tough In Loss To #10 Tritons

POMONA -- Sydney Williams made a season-high eight saves, but a goal by the scoring leader of the conference, UC San Diego's Mary Reilly, in the 56th minute, proved to be the difference as the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the 10th-ranked Tritons on Senior Day at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.

With the loss, the Broncos (4-8-2 overall) were eliminated from CCAA playoff contention, falling to 0-6-2 in conference play.  The Tritons (12-1-1 overall) improved to 7-1 in the CCAA and remain in third place, one point behind co-leaders Chico State and Sonoma State for the top spot in the league standings.

The Broncos saw their fair share of chances to put one on the board against UCSD, but none of their 10 shots would find nylon.  They would, however, make UCSD goalie Angelica Ramos work for her shutout, as Ramos made five saves on the day.  Meanwhile, on defense, CPP held the conference leaders in goals to just the one goal, and Williams made eight huge saves to keep the Tritons from breaking the match wide open.  The lone goal by Reilly was the product of a breakaway by the UCSD striker, who juked past Williams to the right took a couple more dribbles before firing across the goalmouth and into the left side of the net at 55:28.

All told, UCSD outshot CPP, 17-10.

Prior to Sunday's contest, eight seniors were honored for their efforts on and off the field at Cal Poly Pomona -- Natalie Di Angelo, Ambria Pogue, Emily Connor, Aline Graham, Sommer Larrabee, Kalin Tomlinson, Kasie Larson and Sydney Yates.

Cal Poly Pomona will now hit the road for its final four matches of the 2018 season, beginning with a Friday afternoon matchup (a 3:00 pm start time) with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
