HAYWARD, Calif. -- Eduardo Faria got the scoring started in the 25th minute, then
Nadeer Ghantous and
Jimmie Villalobos piled on a pair of second half scores as the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team sprinted past host Cal State East Bay, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward.
The Broncos (11-4 overall) have won nine straight matches, improving to 9-1 in the CCAA and have moved into sole possession of first place in the conference standings, two points ahead of second-place Cal State L.A. with two regular season matches left to play.
It sets up an epic battle between the conference's top two teams when Cal Poly Pomona visits Cal State L.A. Thursday at 7:00 pm. Should the Broncos knock off the Golden Eagles, CPP will capture its first-ever CCAA regular season title. Sunday's win over the Pioneers also guarantees the Broncos one of the top three seeds in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament in two weeks regardless of the results from the team's final two games next weekend.
Despite being outshot by Cal State East Bay on Sunday, 13-11, Cal Poly Pomona spoiled the host's Senior Day with the three-goal victory. After Faria scored at 24:02, it would stay 1-0 until Ghantous converted a penalty kick at 56:48 to make it 2-0. Then, with just under five minutes to go in regulation, Villalobos scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season at 85:02 to cap another undefeated weekend for CPP.
Jakob Hansen made three saves between the posts in his fourth shutout of the season.
